Slept on a foam pad for 6 months, then tried a $12 trick from a guy at a trailhead in Utah
I used to wake up with my hip digging into the ground every single night, no matter how much I inflated my pad. A guy at a trailhead near Moab saw me stretching my back and asked if I was using a closed cell pad under my inflatable. I said no, why would I? He said try it, costs $12 for a basic blue foam pad at Walmart. So I bought one, cut it to fit under my torso, and the difference was wild. My inflatable stopped sliding around on slick tent floors, and the foam added just enough cushion for my bony hips. Now I see people online saying foam pads are outdated and heavy, but that combo worked better for me than a $200 pad I tried last summer. Is it just me, or does anyone else double up with a cheap foam layer under their main pad? Curious if others have tried this or if I'm just late to the party.
