PSA: my 20 degree Kelty bag got way warmer after 4 washes, and I keep going back and forth on whether that makes any dang sense
Bought a Kelty Cosmic 20 about 6 years ago and it slept cold from night one, so I just doubled up on layers and dealt with it. Around 2 months ago I finally washed it for the first time ever, gentle cycle with a tech wash, then dried it on low with tennis balls for like 2 hours. Next trip out in the White Mountains it was 28 degrees and I was actually warm for once, and I started wondering if the down was just packed with body oils and dirt the whole time killing the loft. Now I'm torn on two sides of this: my one buddy says it's not the wash at all, it's that I've lost 15 pounds since I bought it so there's less bag to heat up and less sweat soaking in. The other side of the argument is that a lot of bags ship way underfilled on down and most people never fluff them right, so maybe the dryer did more than the wash did. Either way I'm not buying a new bag this season, but I want to know which one it actually is. Anyone here ever weigh their bag or check the loft before and after a wash and get an answer?
