Guy at the REI in Boise talked me out of the $300 tent I came in for

I went to the REI in Boise last Saturday ready to buy a $300 two person tent I had researched for weeks. The guy at the counter asked where I camp and when I said mostly high desert in July, he said that tent's mesh body turns into a wind tunnel and I'd be miserable. He pointed me to a $180 one with less mesh and solid panels, and honestly he seemed more interested in me sleeping well than in the sale. Made me realize most glowing reviews on the big sites are written by people who tested gear in mild weather once. Has anyone else had a store employee steer them away from the exact thing they came in for?
