Update: Battery gunk almost totaled a vintage Nikon

If you see green crust in the battery compartment, stop and clean it right away. I had one where the corrosion spread and shorted the whole board, took me days to fix. Now I check every time before I even turn the camera on.

Wait, that's usually corrosion eating through circuits, not a short, but still awful.

Man, that's so true. It's like when you ignore a tiny drip under the sink and then your whole cabinet floor is ruined. Small problems just grow if you don't deal with them right away. @taylor.jessica is right that it's eating through stuff, which is its own kind of slow disaster. I see it with my car's check engine light too, you know? A small sensor goes bad, but if you wait, it can mess up way bigger, more expensive parts.

Yeah that corrosion can creep FAR beyond where you first see it.
