That old timer at the camera swap meet who told me to stop cleaning lenses so much

He said every time I wipe the glass I'm just grinding in tiny scratches, and now I'm staring at my $400 vintage 50mm wondering if I should just leave the dust alone, has anyone else had a repair expert say something that totally flipped your routine?

My buddy went through three screens on his Leica M6 before some crusty old repair guy in a basement workshop told him it was his shirt buttons scratching the LCD, not dust. He was wiping that thing religiously, convinced it was dirty, but really he was just grinding glass particles into the coating. Now he leaves it alone unless there's a literal fingerprint, and the camera's been fine for two years. Sometimes the little bits of dust are better than the damage we do trying to get rid of them.

Three screens before realizing his shirt was the problem? That's some expensive tuition for a very basic lesson.

Wait, wait - the buttons on his actual shirt were scratching the glass? That's insane, I've never even thought of that being a thing.
