Talked to a retired Leica tech last week and he changed my whole view on lubricants
He said most of us are using way too much grease on helicoids (especially the thick stuff), and that's what's causing that stiff focus ring after 6 months. Has anyone else noticed faster wear when you pack the threads instead of just a light coat?

Told my barber the same thing about hair clipper oil. He just stared at me.

Yeah that tracks with what I've seen. I used to slather on the thick grease like everyone said, but my M2 got stiff after a few months. Switched to a super thin coat of synthetic grease on just the threads, not packing the whole helicoid, and it's been smooth for over a year now. Also noticed way less wear when I cleaned and relubed the old gunk out first.
