Spent three hours chasing a tiny spring in a Nikon F3 mirror box

The mirror lockup lever on this F3 was totally stuck, and I thought it was just gummed up old grease. After cleaning everything, I saw the tiny spring that pushes the lever back down had jumped off its post and wedged itself behind a gear. Getting it back in place with tweezers while holding the mirror up was a nightmare. Anyone have a trick for keeping those little springs in place during reassembly?

Just use a dab of grease.

Grease can attract dust and grit over time, turning that smooth fix into a gritty mess. A dry graphite powder might work better for things like sticky locks or drawer slides. It doesn't gum up and lasts longer without the dirt magnet problem.

Three times this week I've had to redo something at home because I grabbed the wrong lubricant or cleaner first. It's like the universe wants me to learn that lesson the hard way every time.
