Rant: found out the hard way that lighter fluid is NOT the same as naphtha for shutter cleaning
I was cleaning the slow shutter speeds on a customer's Yashica Mat last Tuesday and reached for the Ronsonol because I ran out of my usual VM&P naphtha. Big mistake. The residue gummed up the escapement within 10 minutes and I spent 3 hours undoing the damage with an ultrasonic bath instead of the 20 minute job it should have been. A retired repair guy in Sacramento told me the additives in lighter fluid vary by batch and can leave behind oils that attract dust forever. Has anyone found a reliable hardware store naphtha brand that stays consistent, or should I just bite the bullet and order the lab grade stuff online?
