Picked a $9 tube of silicone grease over a $22 jar of Helimax for my Nikon F2 finder, and I'm second guessing it
I got a rough Nikon F2 body off a guy in Pittsburgh for $40 and the finder was full of that crusty old foam dust. I had two options sitting on my bench: a $9 tube of silicone grease from the auto parts store or a $22 jar of Helimax that a buddy swears by. I went with the cheap silicone because I figured it's just metal on metal and how wrong can you be. Two days later the advance lever felt gummy and I had to tear the whole thing down again to clean it out. The silicone was too thin and it started migrating into the mirror box, which was a nightmare to mop up with swabs. I finally borrowed some of the Helimax from the same buddy and the shutter feel is night and day, smooth but not slippery. Anyone else made the cheap lube mistake and had to redo a whole CLA because of it?
