Picked a $12 soldering iron over a $60 station for a Nikon F2 meter repair and now I am second guessing
I had a Nikon F2 come in with a dead meter circuit and the customer wanted it done cheap. I stood in the shop looking at my old Weller station that finally died and a $12 pencil iron from the hardware store. I went with the cheap pencil because the job was just two small joints on the ring resistor and I did not want to wait a week for a new station to ship. It went fine for the first joint but the tip was too fat and I nicked a wire on the second one. I got it working but it took me three times as long and I had to redo the wire. Now I am wondering if I should have just bought the $60 station in the first place. What do you all keep on the bench for tiny camera work like this?
The tip being too fat was the real problem there, not the price. A $12 iron with a fine tip would've done that job fine, and a $60 station with a fat tip would've nicked the same wire.
