Just fixed a Nikon F2 with a shutter issue that everyone blames on the wrong part

Three times this month I've seen people replace the shutter curtain on an F2 when the real problem was a dried-up foam bumper on the mirror box. Takes about 10 minutes to swap that foam and costs like 50 cents. Anybody else keep running into this?

Check the foam bumper on the mirror box first, it's a super fast fix.

Tell people to check the simplest cheap fix first and they look at you like you're crazy.

Old cameras aren't the only things where people jump to the hardest fix first... I see this all the time with cars and even home appliances. Everyone wants to swap the big expensive part when the real culprit is some little cheap foam or a dried out rubber gasket. It's like we're programmed to think the biggest problem needs the biggest answer, but usually it's the simple stuff that gets overlooked. Makes you wonder how much money gets wasted on parts that were never broken to begin with.
