Guy at the camera swap meet told me to stop cleaning every contact with alcohol

He said some old contact points have a coating that gets stripped off. Three weeks later my Nikon F2's meter started acting flaky again after a deep clean. Anyone else ruined a connection by being too thorough?

Yeah, the "coating that gets stripped off" bit is what got me too, I used to be all about alcohol until I wrecked a circuit board.

Laugh at me all you want, but I did the exact same thing with a laptop motherboard back in college. Thought I was being smart cleaning old thermal paste off the CPU with isopropyl, ended up stripping the protective coating right off a nearby trace. That board was toast, completely dead after that. So yeah, @hugo_jones2, you're not alone in learning that lesson the hard way. Now I just use those special electronics cleaners and a soft brush, way less risky than trusting alcohol on everything.
