Can we talk about the repair log a retired guy in Toledo showed me?
He kept a notebook going back to 1974 and wrote down every camera that came through his bench, over 1,100 of them, and the tiny note next to a Canonet QL17 just said 'shutter gum, cleaned, good as new.' Does anyone else still keep a paper log, or is it all in an app for you now?
Man, that Canonet note says it all. I still keep a paper log for my own repairs (started in 2009, nowhere near 1,100 cameras though, maybe 300). The trick is writing the fix and not just the problem. "Shutter gum, cleaned" tells you what to do next time. If I just wrote "shutter stuck" I'd be lost two years later. I also jot the date and a one word note on how it came in (estate sale, flea market, grandpa's closet) because that tells you a lot about what you'll find inside. Apps are fine for tracking a customer's ticket, but nothing beats flipping through pages when you hit a weird one and remember you fixed the same thing in 2014.
