Warning: I was stripping jacket way too deep for years and a $12 tool showed me
Back in my early days running drops in Akron I always cut the outer jacket back about 4 inches into the box, figuring more slack meant easier termination. Last month a rookie on my crew held up a little plastic strip gauge and asked why I was leaving that much exposed pair, and I honestly didn't have an answer. He showed me how the extra length inside the box lets the pairs flop around and cross over each other once the cover goes on. Twenty two years of doing it my way and the fix took him about 30 seconds to point out. Who else had a greenhorn catch something you'd been doing wrong since day one?
