Spent $150 on a Klein tone generator kit - worth it or overkill for residential work?

I dropped $150 on a Klein VDV500-820 kit last month and it's saved me hours tracing lines in tight attics, but my buddy swears by a $30 Amazon knockoff that does the same job. Has anyone else put real money into a tone generator and regretted it or felt it paid off?

Oh man, I totally get this! I bought the same Klein kit and honestly, it feels like a luxury item but it works flawlessly every time. No static or weak signals in the attic like I got with cheap ones. That said, your buddy is right that the cheap ones can work just fine in most homes. I think it really depends on how much you value your time and patience. For me, it paid off because I got tired of fighting bad connections in tight spaces. But if you're just doing basic stuff, save your cash and go cheap.

Ngl the $30 knockoff will probably work fine until you're sweating in a 130 degree attic trying to trace a single Cat6 through a rats nest of old phone lines. Then you'll be praying for that Klein signal strength while your buddy's cheap tone generator sounds like a dying mosquito. I've been there, threw the cheap one across the garage after it couldn't punch through a 50 foot run. Sometimes you pay for the warranty too, Klein replaced my probe when I dropped it off a ladder no questions asked.
