Remember when we had to tone out every line by hand?

Back in 2003 in Columbus, every install meant hauling out the tone generator and wand, tracing each drop through who knows how many splices. Now I just plug in the tester and get a map on my phone in 30 seconds. Anyone else miss the satisfaction of finding that one bad pair after 20 minutes of hunting?

Hell yeah, and you know what nobody talks about? Those old tone traces were the only time we actually learned the plant, pair by pair, splice by splice. Now I plug in and it spits out a map, but I couldn't tell you which pedestal feeds which house if my life depended on it. That 20 minute hunt meant you knew every rat's nest in that pedestal, and you could fix the next one blindfolded. These kid techs just swap the modem and walk away, no clue what's actually broken. The tester's nice, but it made us lazy, and that lazy is why we get the same ticket three times in a week.
