Ran into a nightmare pulling fiber through an old conduit yesterday

I was doing a install in a 1980s office building and had to run a new fiber line through an existing 1 inch conduit. Took me almost 3 hours for a 50 foot run because someone had left a bunch of old Cat5e cables in there completely tangled up. I tried using a fish tape first but it kept hitting snags, then switched to a vacuum and pull string which finally worked. Has anyone else dealt with abandoned cables blocking conduit and found a faster way than just brute forcing it?

Pull a mule tape through when you pull the old cables out. Saves future you.

Oh man I read somewhere that leaving a pull string is basically cheap insurance for future you.
