An old timer in Omaha once asked me why I was rushing a drop wire job

I was 23, trying to finish a four-unit apartment install before lunch. He watched me for a minute from his porch and said, 'You're putting that line up for the next twenty years, not just for today.' He pointed out how I'd pulled the wire too tight against a downspout. That was six years ago, and I still check every anchor point twice. How do you balance speed with doing a job that lasts?

@jackson.sarah nailed it - that extra minute checking connections saves headaches. Something I don't hear folks mention is accounting for the building settling over time, which can shift tension on existing work. Ever had a repair years later that traced back to foundation movement rather than your install?

Check your last three connections before you call it done. I make it a rule to never pull wire so tight it sings, always leave a little slack for temperature changes. That extra minute per unit saves a weekend callback later. What's one thing you double-check every time now?

Actually leaving too much slack can cause vibration damage over time. Just enough for expansion but not so much it moves around.

Ask how you tell when you've hit that sweet spot on slack?
