Always thought those cheap cable toner kits were a waste of money
Honestly, I used to think you just needed a good multimeter and some patience. Then I got stuck in a crawl space in Phoenix for two hours trying to find a break in a line. My boss showed up with a $40 toner kit from the truck, clipped it on, and we found the spot in like five minutes. It was just a tiny nick from a staple. Ngl, I bought one the next day. What's the cheapest tool that actually saved you a ton of time?

My old boss swore by a $20 voltage sniffer. It's just a pen light that beeps near live wires. Saved me from cutting into a hot line more than once.

Ever get false positives with those sniffers? I've had them beep on conduit with no wires inside, which makes me second guess them sometimes. How do you tell the difference between a real hot wire and just stray voltage or something weird?

When you get that false beep, do you test with a meter right away or just assume it's stray voltage?
