Unpopular opinion: pocket hole screws are overused in cabinets

I had a client's kitchen island face frame split right down the middle last Tuesday (the panel was maple, 3/4 inch). The previous guy had used pocket screws every 4 inches and it just tore itself apart with seasonal movement. I replaced it with traditional mortise and tenon joints and through dowels, no issues. Has anyone else seen pocket screws cause failures like this, or am I just unlucky?

Switched to floating tenons on my last three kitchens and zero callbacks.
