Tried a $12 dowel jig from the big box, learned a lesson

Picked up a cheap dowel jig last week to save some cash on a quick kitchen cabinet job. The holes came out crooked on three out of eight panels, wasted two sheets of birch plywood. Anyone else found a budget-friendly jig that actually holds alignment for production work?
