The old cabinetmaker on my block retired last year.
His shop was always open for tips. Now it's a coffee shop, and I miss the smell of fresh cut wood.

Hold up, doesn't a neighborhood lose its charm when a cabinetmaker leaves? How many coffee shops do we really need?

Change can be good for a neighborhood. Coffee shops give people a place to meet and talk. That's a pretty solid trade.

Remember when that old hardware store closed on my block. We all got sad, but the new bakery that opened became our morning spot. It kept the neighborly feeling alive with a fresh purpose.
