A finisher in Tulsa asked why my shelves were dead level, and it wrecked my whole setup

I used to shim every cabinet to dead level on its own (spirit level, the whole deal) until a finisher named Ray watched me do it on a maple job and said 'you're making each box a little island.' He showed me he runs one straight line off the back wall and shims everything to that instead, so the gaps stay even even when the floor drops. Blew my mind that 1/8 inch out of level across 12 feet of run matters less than keeping a continuous sightline down the face frames. Anyone else build to a reference line, or do you fight each box into level and hope for the best?
