The open house in Dayton had a crack in the basement floor and the agent's answer bugged me
I went to an open house on Saturday in Dayton, Ohio, mostly just to get a feel for what $240k buys right now. The place looked fine upstairs, but in the basement there was a crack running across the floor, maybe 6 feet long. I asked the listing agent about it and she said "all basements have cracks, it's totally normal" and moved on fast. That answer did not sit right with me, so I took a picture and showed it to a home inspector friend. He said that crack pattern can mean water is pushing up under the slab, which is a totally different fix than a hairline crack. He also pointed out the downspout outside was dumping water right next to the foundation. The whole thing taught me to never take the listing agent's word on structural stuff, since they work for the seller, not me. If you've bought a house with a cracked slab, did you get it checked before you made an offer or just roll with it?
