Talked to my grandma about house prices and it hit different

She bought her first house in 1972 for $18,000. I just closed on mine for $285,000. Same city, smaller house. She said she worked part time at a diner and paid it off in 8 years. I do property management full time and still needed a second job for the down payment. That conversation made me realize how different the world is now. She wasn't trying to make me feel bad, just stating facts. But it stuck with me. Anyone else have a relative that puts things in perspective like that?

Read a study recently that said housing prices have gone up like 5x faster than wages since the 70s. It's wild how even with a degree and full time work, we can't get what our grandparents did with a part time gig. My aunt told me her first mortgage rate was 6% and she thought that was high lol. Now we're out here celebrating if we get under 7%.
