My father-in-law told me to skip the sewer scope inspection to save $300.
We bought the house in Tacoma last fall, and now we're facing a $12,000 repair for a collapsed line under the driveway. He said the house was new enough that it wouldn't be an issue, but he was very wrong. Has anyone else had a family member give them bad inspection advice that cost them big later?

Honestly I used to think the same way your father-in-law did, like why spend extra money when the house looks fine. But after a buddy of mine skipped a sewer scope on a flip house he bought, he ended up sinking almost ten grand into replacing the main line before he could even list it. That was enough to change my mind completely. Now I tell everyone that $300 is cheap compared to the headache of digging up your driveway or yard. It's one of those things where you just don't know what's under there until you look, and sometimes what you don't know will cost you big.

Man, that's brutal. My uncle talked me out of a foundation inspection once (said the cracks were "just settling"). Fast forward two years and we had to install helical piers, which was not cheap. Now I get every single inspection, even the optional ones. That small fee is basically insurance against a nightmare like yours.
