Looking at my closing statement and that $2,100 line item for the 'origination fee' just floored me

My parents bought their place in Akron for $85k in the 90s and I remember them complaining about a $500 fee. Seeing that number now, adjusted for inflation but also just the sheer scale of modern loan costs, really put the whole market shift into perspective for me. It's not just the house price, it's every single step of the process that's gotten heavier. Anyone else get blindsided by a specific closing cost they weren't fully braced for?

And the title insurance was another gut punch, honestly.

Remember when they used to just hand you a key? The whole closing process now feels like a weird tax on existing. I miss the old days.
