Hot take: Should you ever waive the home inspection contingency?

I overheard my coworker saying his realtor told him to skip the inspection to compete with cash offers during our local market in Phoenix, but then I read a story about a family who found 15k in foundation issues after closing without one. Which side makes more sense in this crazy market, skip it for a chance at the house or hold firm even if it means losing out?

My buddy in Portland skipped the inspection on a cute bungalow last year because his agent said the same thing. Three months later the sewer line collapsed and it cost him eight grand to dig up his front yard and replace it. The seller knew about the roots in the pipes and just didn't say anything. I'd rather lose five bids than get stuck with that kind of surprise.
