Bought a $40 "lifetime" cordless drill at a flea market in Tulsa back in March, it died on the second deck board
Guy swore the battery was good and the brushes were fresh, and I handed over forty bucks because it felt heavy in my hand. Got maybe 30 screws into my sister's deck before it started smoking and the chuck stopped grabbing bits. Took it apart and the motor windings were black, plus it had a rebuild sticker from 1998 under the handle. So now I'm out the cash and a Saturday, and I'm back to my corded DeWalt that's older than my truck. What's the tell you look for on used power tools so you don't end up holding someone else's paperweight?
