Heating the plug with a lighter saved my dying cable

My phone kept saying slow charging for like a week, and the cable looked fine from outside. I was about to toss it in the recycling bin when a guy at a repair kiosk in Denver told me to heat the connector gently with a lighter for a few seconds. It sounds crazy, but the plastic had a hairline internal break and the heat let the contacts reseat themselves. It bought me another 3 months before I finally replaced it, and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this or if I just got super lucky.
