Bought a '100W' USB-C cable off Amazon for $9 and my laptop charged at 12W, so I cut it open
I keep seeing people say all USB-C cables are the same and the price is just branding. That is wrong and I can prove it. Last month I grabbed a 3 pack of cables for $9 on Amazon because they said 100W right on the package. My laptop kept saying slow charger and would only hit 12 watts according to my little inline meter. So I cut one open at my workbench and there was no e-marker chip inside at all, just four skinny wires and a tiny bit of shielding. A real 100W cable has to have that chip or the charger refuses to push full power. Now I test every cable I buy with the meter before it goes in my bag, takes ten seconds. If you have a cable that only charges slow, check it with a meter and let me know what wattage you get, I'm curious how many of these are fake.
