A stranger's tip about pin gauges fixed my bent charging ports for good

I kept replacing cables every month because the male ends were bending the tiny fins inside my phone's port. Some random guy at a repair meetup in Austin told me to stop forcing the plug and gently wiggle it out using a SIM ejector tool as a guide. He also said to check the port with a flashlight before blaming the cable, and sure enough, there was a wad of pocket lint jammed in there. Now I clean the port monthly and I haven't killed a single cable in 9 weeks. Anyone else find that the port itself is the real culprit half the time?

Pin gauges are a great trick but honestly the real issue is dust and pocket debris building up inside the port until it acts like a wall. Once that lint gets compacted enough, the cable can't seat all the way and the pins bend because they're hitting resistance. Most people blame the cable because it looks fine on the outside but the port is the one that's basically clogged. A soft toothbrush with a little isopropyl alcohol does the same job as the gauges if you're careful, and it's cheaper. The flashlight check is what saved me though, you can see the gunk before it does damage.
