TIL plumber's tape on a shower arm is real and my $6 fix beat the $400 quote
I always thought thread tape was one of those things old guys push just to sound smart, so when my shower head leaked into the wall at my place in Phoenix I called a plumber. He wanted $400 to open up drywall and replace the arm, but my neighbor Ray handed me a roll of the blue stuff and said to wrap it 3 times clockwise. I tried it in 10 minutes just to prove him wrong, and the drip stopped stone cold. Then I got cocky and taped the kitchen faucet too, kept going 3 turns, and cracked the plastic nut because I cranked it like a lug bolt. So now I'm a believer in the tape but not in my own hands. Anyone else learn a cheap fix the hard way while breaking something else in the same afternoon?
