Pro tip: I fixed a stripped shower drain flange with a rubber glove and a hose clamp, now I'm not sure I did the right thing
So about 6 months ago the drain in my upstairs shower started leaking into the ceiling below, and when I pulled the flange off, the threads were totally stripped, so the screws just spun in place and nothing would bite. A plumber quoted me $650 to cut out the pipe and redo the whole trap, which felt insane for what looked like a tiny problem. I messed with it for 3 weekends, tried plumber's putty, tried a bigger screw that just cracked the plastic more, then out of frustration I cut a finger off an old rubber glove, wrapped it around the flange lip, and cranked a 1/2 inch hose clamp down over the whole thing. It has held for 6 months now, zero drips, and I keep checking the drywall every couple weeks like it's gonna betray me. So here is my debate for you all: is a dumb rubber glove fix like this actually fine, or am I just sitting on a slow leak that'll show up as a mold problem next spring? Half of me says if it works it works and $650 stays in my pocket, other half says I rigged it and I'm gonna regret it. Has anyone here done a hack like this and had it last years, or did it blow up on you later?
