Pro tip: gave up on the YouTube tutorial and called my neighbor about the toilet, night and day difference
Two winters back I tried to swap out the fill valve in my upstairs toilet by following a 14 minute video some guy filmed in his garage. I had the water shut off, a bucket, a sponge, and about 45 minutes before my wife got home from her shift. The video skipped the part where the old nut was rusted solid, so I cranked on it with a pair of channel locks, slipped, and put my elbow through the drywall behind the tank. Water everywhere, drywall dust in my coffee, and a shutoff valve that started weeping the second I touched it. My neighbor Dale came over when he heard me yell, looked at the mess for two seconds, and said to always crack the valve a quarter turn first instead of yanking the nut cold. He had the whole thing swapped in 20 minutes with a rag and a plastic grocery bag over the valve so nothing dripped into the ceiling. I still patched that drywall square three times before it looked right, and I ended up paying $60 for a sheet of 5/8 drywall I only used a corner of. Anyone else learn a house repair the hard way right before company showed up?
