My uncle said to use wood filler on the door frame gap instead of caulk, and now I have a crack down my whole wall

He swore by it when I called him from the hardware store 3 weeks ago, but the filler dried stiff and every time the door slams the frame pulls away, so now I'm staring at a 4 foot crack in the drywall next to the hinge, and does anyone know if expanding foam would have been the right call here?
