My old boss in Dayton bragged about his 1 gig fiber line but every order entry screen still took 8 seconds to load
Turned out his whole office ran on a 15 year old router with 12 devices fighting for wifi and he blamed the provider for a full year, so how do you get a small business owner to actually look at their own gear before calling the ISP?
The trick is to make it cost him money somehow. Guys like that won't listen to tech talk but they sure listen when their leads stop answering the phone because the CRM is crawling. I used to do IT for a few small shops and the only thing that got owners to replace old gear was watching a salesperson lose a deal in real time, like standing there while a customer hung up. There's also the power bill angle, those old routers and switches pull way more juice than people think, and you can show him the math over a year. Same with security, a 15 year old router probably hasn't seen a firmware update since Obama was in office and that's a real risk he can get sued over. Sometimes you just gotta talk in the language they actually care about, which is money and fear.
