Just realized my business line was down 3 days because of one wrong setting
Last Tuesday our card reader stopped working at the shop around 8am and I figured it was the bank's problem. It took me until Thursday afternoon to figure out the static IP on our router had reset after a power flicker, and our ISP support kept telling me it was an equipment issue on my end. I burned about 9 hours on hold and 4 phone calls before a tech in Columbus actually explained the fix in 2 minutes. We lost roughly $1,800 in card sales and I was taking cash only like it was 1995. Anyone else had their static IP drop without warning, and is there a way to lock that setting down?
What did the Columbus tech actually tell you to change though? Because if it was just re-entering the old static IP on the router, that's one thing, but if the router itself wiped its config after the flicker, that's a whole different problem and it'll probably happen again the next time your power blinks. Did you check if the router has a setting to save the config to a file or a cloud backup? A lot of those cheaper router models lose everything on a hard reset and there's no way to lock the static IP so it stays put unless the ISP assigns it on their end instead of you typing it in manually. Were you on a business plan with your ISP or just a normal home account? Because most business plans will pin the static IP on their side and then it doesn't matter what your router does.
