I finally traced our cafe's card reader dropouts to the real culprit after 2 weeks of blaming the ISP
Every afternoon around 2pm our card reader at the coffee shop would drop offline for about 90 seconds, and customers would stand there while I rebooted the whole thing. I called the ISP three times and they kept saying the line tested clean, so I finally watched our router logs and saw the backup LTE failover kicking in every single day at the same time. Turns out our old router was set to run a daily firmware check that briefly killed the WAN port, and it had been doing it under the counter for who knows how long. I turned off the auto update and scheduled it for 4am instead, and we have not had a single dropout in 11 days. Anyone else find out their 'internet problem' was really a router setting all along?
Are you sure it was really the firmware check killing the WAN port, and not just the failover masking something else? Daily firmware checks usually just ping the server and download if there is a new version, they don't normally drop the port for 90 seconds. What you probably saw was the LTE failover kicking in because the main line went down for another reason, and the timing matched your check by chance. Did you go back and look at the WAN logs for the actual disconnect reason, like a DHCP lease renewal or a PPPoE re-auth? Because if the real issue is still out there, it could come back later and you would never know since the failover covers it.
