Spent 2 hours fighting one crooked monthly spread because of my ruler

I kept measuring from the spine of my Leuchtturm and everything came out slanted by the third box. Turned out the book doesn't lay flat no matter how much I press it, so I switched to measuring off the outer edge instead and it lined up in about 10 minutes. Felt silly but honestly the spread looks clean now. What do you all use as your straight edge reference when the pages won't sit flat?
