My sister asked why I draw 30 tiny squares every night and I didn't have a good answer
We were sitting on her porch in Tacoma last weekend and she watched me fill in my mood tracker for maybe the fifth night in a row, and she just asked it plain: what is that actually doing for you? I started to say something about mindfulness and then stopped, because honestly I've been copying the same layout off Pinterest for eight months and I've never once gone back and read the patterns in it. I sat there trying to remember a single useful thing those squares taught me and came up empty. The trackers, the habit grids, the little sleep logs, they all look great in the photos but I think I've been decorating a notebook instead of using one. What stung is she wasn't being mean, she just doesn't journal and it looks like a chore from the outside. I've now got three pages a month I fill in and zero pages I read. Do any of you actually look back at your old spreads, and if so what do you do with what you find?
Ha! You built a tiny museum of feelings and never once went back for a tour. I did the same thing with a reading log for a whole year, filled in every book, and then cracked it open months later and found out past me had written "good" next to like 40 titles. Amazing work, past me, very helpful. Honestly the squares might still be doing something even if you never read them, since stopping to mark the day is its own tiny pause. But if you want the data to actually say something, try a quick once a month flip through with a pen in hand and circle anything that looks weird. Worst case you find out Tuesday is your bad day and you can start blaming it properly.
