I swore $220 for a torque wrench was a waste until my $40 one snapped a head bolt in my garage
Last month I was doing a head gasket on my 2003 Ranger in my own garage and my cheap $40 torque wrench from the parts store gave out on the last bolt. It clicked at what felt like 80 foot pounds but the bolt snapped clean and I had to pull the head again and buy a whole new set of bolts for $65. A buddy who builds engines for a living over in Council Bluffs kept telling me to get a real one, and I blew him off for two years because I figured a wrench is a wrench. I finally dropped $220 on a used Snap-on off Marketplace and the next four bolts all hit spec smooth as butter. That one snapped bolt cost me a weekend, a gasket kit, and the bolts, so the cheap one burned me way more than the good one ever would have. Now I am wondering what else in my box is quietly waiting to screw me over. Anyone here have a tool that snapped on them and taught you the hard way?
