I finally tried a mesh wifi setup in my 1920s house and it actually killed the dead zones
Six months ago I was ready to run ethernet through every wall in my Cleveland rental after my $180 router kept dying in the back bedroom. My buddy swore a 3 pack of mesh nodes would work without drilling a single hole, and I figured it was just marketing hype for people who don't know how to crimp a cable. I set them up in about 40 minutes and the back room went from 2 bars to full signal, no joke. Now I want to know if anyone here has used mesh in a place with plaster walls, since mine are lath and I'm curious if it holds up when the signal has to punch through all that.
Man, mesh nodes saved my butt in my grandma's old house too but for a totally different reason. She had this ancient plaster setup and the wifi would not reach her sewing room in the back, so I tossed two nodes in and boom, full bars. The funny part is her neighbor kept complaining his wifi got worse after I set it up, turns out we were stepping on his channel the whole time. I had to go into the app and switch channels to get him off my back, literally. So yeah mesh works through plaster in my experience but watch out for your neighbors channels if you're in a tight lot. Lath walls are a whole other beast though since that metal mesh inside can mess with signal more than plain plaster does.
