TIL the hard way why you never build on carpet in a basement
Was putting together a new rig on my basement carpet in Toledo last month and zapped the board with static I couldn't even feel. Lost a $180 motherboard and a stick of RAM before I figured out what happened. Do you all use a work mat or just build on a table, because I'm never going near carpet again.
Man that sucks, sorry you had to learn it that way. Losing a board and RAM to something you can't even feel is the worst part, it feels like it came out of nowhere. I fried a hard drive years ago the same way and I still get twitchy when I walk on carpet in socks near my desk. These days I just build on a wood table and touch the bare metal of the case before I grab anything. A cheap mat is worth it too if you've got a carpeted room, way cheaper than eating another dead board. You're not dumb for this, half the people who build on carpet just get lucky and never find out.
