Hot take: I used a plastic fork to spread thermal paste on my first build and it ran 8 degrees cooler than my fancy spreader
Back in 2016 I built a little i5 rig in a cheap case and the paste kit came with a tiny plastic fork looking thing. I lost the fork somewhere on my carpet, so I just used a regular plastic fork from the kitchen drawer and spread it thin in one pass. Checked temps under load and it sat at 62C, which beat the 70C I got the next time with the proper tool and way too much paste. Turns out a thin even layer matters way more than whatever you spread it with. Anyone else get better temps from a dumb mistake like that?
