Update: I saw my friend's budget spreadsheet and the grocery category was just one big number

They were putting everything from milk to paper towels into a single $600 line, which made it impossible to see where the money was really going. I showed them how splitting it into food, household, and personal care helped me cut my own spending by $80 a month. How do you guys break down your grocery spending to find savings?

Splitting it into food, household, and personal care is the way to go. My partner and I used to do the same thing, one big number for the whole store run. We finally split it and realized we were spending a crazy amount on fancy cleaning sprays and snacks every single week. Just seeing it broken down made us buy the store brand stuff more often.

Oh man, we went through the exact same thing last year... it's wild how much the little stuff adds up when you actually look at it separate. I still have a soft spot for my fancy counter spray but switching to generic stuff feels way less painful now that I see where the money's going.

Sounds like a lot of extra work for very little payoff honestly.
