Update: I cut my electric bill by $30 last month with a simple timer plug

My bill was always high, especially in the summer with the AC. I got a $15 smart plug from the hardware store and set it to turn my living room lamp and TV off for 8 hours overnight. I didn't think it would do much, but it added up fast. Has anyone else tried this with other appliances like a coffee maker or a gaming console?

Nah, I get your point but I think the energy savings are worth the hassle of resetting stuff. If a device can't handle being off for a few hours, maybe it's just poorly designed. I'd rather save the cash.

Wait, you can just do that? I tried something like that with my old cable box once, but it messed up the guide updates and I had to reset it every morning. Kind of made me wonder if some electronics really need to stay on all the time, you know?

I read somewhere that a lot of those older boxes need to be on to get guide data overnight... it downloads in the middle of the night when no one is using it. Your experience totally lines up with that. Makes sense they'd design it that way to avoid using bandwidth during peak hours. Newer streaming stuff seems way less picky about being on all the time though.
