Thought I'd have my emergency fund sorted in a month, took me eight
I figured I could just cut out eating out and skip a few coffee runs to save $1,000 fast. But then my car needed new tires out of nowhere, and my dog had a vet visit that ate up $400. Each time I'd get close, something else popped up like a forgotten subscription or a higher electric bill. It actually took me eight months of tracking every dollar to finally hit that $1,000 goal. Has anyone else had a simple budget goal take way longer than expected because of surprise costs?

I saw this budgeting article that said most people underestimate surprise costs by like 60% when they first start tracking. Your story is basically textbook. My own emergency fund took way longer too because I forgot my car registration and insurance premiums hit in the same month. It's always something random like a friend's wedding gift or a parking ticket you forgot about. The first $1,000 is seriously the hardest part because you haven't learned to see all the cracks where money leaks out.

Oh man, that article is so spot on! I remember thinking I was being super careful with my budget and then bam, my dog got sick and the vet bill wiped out everything I saved that month. It's like the universe tests you on purpose when you first start. You don't know what you don't know, and those "hidden" expenses just sneak up on you every time. The first grand really does feel impossible because you're still figuring out where your money actually goes versus where you think it goes. It gets way easier once you've been through a few of those surprise hits and learn to plan for them.
