My brother told me my 'fun money' category was way too vague and it changed my budget

Totally get that, my husband said the same thing last year. I had everything from coffee to movie tickets just lumped in there. Breaking it down was a REAL eye-opener, I was shocked how much went to little things. It feels annoying at first but it honestly gives you so much more control. Now my "fun" money is just for treats I really plan for.

Is it really that deep though? I mean, @dianab68, no offense but calling a spreadsheet a "real eye-opener" is a bit dramatic. It's coffee and movies, not a mortgage payment. I get that tracking stuff can help some people, but if you're shocked by a few bucks on takeout you might be looking at the wrong numbers. Seems like a lot of effort just to justify skipping a latte once a week. You do you, but I'd rather just enjoy my treats and not stress over every penny.

Real eye-opener" feels a bit strong for tracking coffee runs. It's just money, not a life changing event. That level of control sounds like a lot of work for maybe a few bucks saved. Sometimes a coffee is just a coffee, not a budget line item.
