Grocery store clearance bread changed my meal planning game

So I wandered into the bakery aisle at 7pm last Tuesday and saw they mark down bread 50% if it expires in 2 days. Now I grab 3 loaves for like $5 total, freeze them, and just toast what I need. Has anyone else found a weird store clearance trick that actually saves cash?

Bread freezes way better than most people think, and toasting it hides the age totally. Ever tried grabbing day-old bagels from the bakery section? Those freeze just as good for a fraction of the price.

I've been doing this for years and it really works. The key is to freeze the bread the same day you buy it, not after it's been sitting on the counter for two days. Also, check the clearance rack in the morning if you can, that's when they usually put out the markdowns from the previous night. Day old bagels are a solid tip too, I slice and freeze them for quick breakfast sandwiches all month. One thing I would add is to avoid the really crusty artisan loaves for freezing, they get weird when they thaw. Stick to standard sandwich bread or soft rolls and you'll save a good chunk of change without sacrificing anything.
